This guide shows how to find your largest videos with built-in tools, why iPhone video files get so big, and how to decide what to do with each one.
Why iPhone videos take so much space
Video size depends mostly on resolution, frame rate, and length. 4K at 60 frames per second creates far larger files than 1080p at 30 frames per second, and Cinematic mode, slow motion, and ProRes (on models that support it) add more. You can see Apple's own size estimates for each format in Settings > Camera > Record Video.
Long screen recordings and videos saved from messaging apps add up too. They are easy to forget because you rarely scroll back to them.
Find large videos with the Photos app
- Open Photos and find the Media Types section, then tap Videos. This shows only videos, with the duration on each thumbnail.
- Long durations are a good first signal of large files. Open a video and swipe up, or tap the info button, to see details including file size on recent iOS versions.
- Also check Screen Recordings and Slo-mo under Media Types. Both are frequently overlooked.
The Photos app does not offer a simple “sort by size” option, so with a big library this step can be slow. That is the main reason people use a scanning tool for videos.
Check iPhone Storage for videos outside Photos
Not every large video lives in your photo library. In Settings > General > iPhone Storage:
- Tap Messages, then Review Large Attachments or the Videos category to find clips people sent you.
- Check streaming and video apps (TV, Netflix, YouTube, and so on) for downloaded episodes and movies.
- Open the Files app and look in Downloads and On My iPhone for exported or downloaded videos.
Decide what to do with each video
Not every large video should be deleted. A quick decision for each one:
- Delete: accidental recordings, pocket videos, duplicates of the same clip, and screen recordings you no longer need.
- Trim: in Photos, tap Edit and drag the ends of the timeline to cut dead time. Saving as a new clip keeps the original, so use Save Video (not Save as New Clip) if you want the space back, or delete the original afterward.
- Compress: keep the memory at a smaller file size. This works well for everyday clips you will mostly watch on a phone. Our guide on compressing iPhone videos without losing quality covers settings and tradeoffs.
- Archive: move important, high-quality footage (weddings, travel, projects) to a computer, external drive, or cloud storage, verify it plays, then remove it from the phone.
Stop large videos from piling up
- Pick a recording format that matches how you use video. If you mostly share clips in messages, 1080p at 30 fps is usually plenty. Change it in Settings > Camera > Record Video.
- Keep Settings > Camera > Formats on High Efficiency, which records in HEVC and uses less space than Most Compatible.
- Delete or archive long clips soon after an event, while you still remember which ones matter.
Using Storage Cleaner for videos
If scrolling through the Videos album is too slow, Storage Cleaner can help. It scans your library on the device to find large videos and shows how much space you could reclaim before deleting anything. It also finds duplicate videos and offers photo and video compression with a size comparison between original and compressed versions. Nothing is changed without your confirmation, and processing stays on your iPhone. Scanning and previewing are free; full cleanup and unlimited compression are part of the paid options shown on the App Store listing.
Checklist
- Open Photos > Media Types > Videos and look at the longest clips first.
- Check Screen Recordings and Slo-mo.
- Review large Messages attachments and app downloads in iPhone Storage.
- Delete throwaways, trim long clips, compress everyday videos, archive important footage.
- Empty Recently Deleted when you are sure.
- Adjust your camera's recording format for the future.
FAQ
How big is a minute of iPhone video?
It depends on your format. Settings > Camera > Record Video lists Apple's estimate for each option on your specific iPhone.
Does trimming a video save space?
Only if you replace the original. Saving as a new clip keeps both.
Will compressing a video ruin it?
Moderate compression is usually hard to notice on a phone screen. Keep originals of footage you may want to edit or view on a big screen.
Why didn't storage drop after deleting videos?
They are in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. See why Recently Deleted still uses space.
Want a faster, review-first cleanup?
Storage Cleaner scans your library on your iPhone for duplicate photos, similar shots, and large videos, then lets you preview everything before anything changes. Free to scan and preview.
