How to Clear Messages Attachments and Old Conversations on iPhone

Years of photos, videos, voice notes, and group chats can quietly turn Messages into one of the biggest apps on your iPhone. The good news: you can shrink it a lot without wiping every conversation.

This guide shows how to see what Messages is storing, remove the biggest attachments first, and set things up so the clutter does not come back.

Step 1: See how much space Messages uses

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and wait a moment for the list to load. Find Messages in the list of apps. Tapping it shows a breakdown of what is stored, usually split into categories like Photos, Videos, GIFs and Stickers, and Other. That tells you whether the problem is a few large videos or thousands of small images.

If Messages is only using a small amount of space, this is not where your storage went. Check our guide on finding hidden storage on iPhone instead.

Step 2: Review large attachments first

The fastest win is usually a handful of big files. On the same Messages screen in iPhone Storage, look for Review Large Attachments. It lists the biggest attachments across all your conversations, sorted by size.

  1. Tap Review Large Attachments (or one of the categories, such as Videos).
  2. Tap Edit, select the items you no longer need, and tap the delete button. On some iOS versions you can also swipe left on a single item to delete it.
  3. Go back to the Messages screen and watch the total drop.
Before you delete: a photo or video sent to you in Messages is not automatically in your Photos library. If you want to keep it, open it in the conversation and save it to Photos first (tap the share button, then Save Image or Save Video).

Step 3: Clean up a single conversation

Sometimes one group chat holds most of the media. To clean just that conversation:

  1. Open the conversation in Messages and tap the name or photo at the top.
  2. Scroll down to see the shared photos, links, and documents.
  3. Tap See All next to Photos, then Select, pick what you do not need, and delete it.

This keeps the conversation text, which takes very little space, while removing the heavy media.

Step 4: Delete old conversations you do not need

Old threads with delivery codes, verification messages, and expired group plans add up. In the Messages list, swipe left on a conversation and tap the trash icon, or tap Edit (or the more button) at the top and choose Select Messages to remove several at once.

Depending on your iOS version, deleted conversations may first move to a Recently Deleted folder in Messages, where they stay for up to 30 days. If you want the space back now, open that folder from the Edit or Filters menu and delete them permanently. Our explainer on why Recently Deleted still uses space covers the same idea for Photos.

Step 5: Let old messages delete themselves

By default, iPhone keeps messages forever. You can change that in Settings > Messages > Keep Messages (on newer iOS versions this may be under Settings > Apps > Messages). The options are 30 Days, 1 Year, and Forever.

  • 1 Year is a reasonable middle ground for most people.
  • 30 Days saves the most space but removes a lot of history, so only choose it if you really do not look back.

When you switch to a shorter period, iPhone asks to confirm because it will delete older messages and their attachments right away. Save anything important before you confirm.

While you are in Messages settings, two more options help:

  • Audio Messages > Expire: set voice notes to expire after a couple of minutes unless you choose to keep them.
  • Low Quality Image Mode: sends smaller images. It saves space and data, at the cost of image quality for the people you send to.

What about Messages in iCloud?

If Messages in iCloud is turned on, your conversations sync across your Apple devices. Deleting a message or attachment on your iPhone also deletes it on your other devices that use the same Apple Account. That is usually what you want, but it means you cannot keep a full archive on your Mac while trimming your iPhone. If you need a permanent copy of something, save it somewhere else first.

Messages in iCloud also counts against your iCloud storage, so cleaning up attachments can free iCloud space too.

Saved attachments can be duplicates

If you often tap Save on photos people send you, many of them end up in your Photos library as compressed copies of pictures you already have, especially from family group chats. Deleting them from Messages does not remove the saved copy in Photos. Storage Cleaner can find those compressed and resized copies in your photo library on your iPhone and group them with the original so you can keep the best version. Scanning and previewing are free.

FAQ

Will deleting attachments delete the whole conversation?

No. Deleting an attachment from Review Large Attachments or from a conversation's details removes only that file. The text of the conversation stays.

Does setting Keep Messages to 1 Year delete my photos?

It deletes messages older than a year along with their attachments. Photos you already saved to your Photos library are not affected.

Why is Messages still large after deleting conversations?

Deleted conversations may be in the Messages Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days, and iPhone Storage can take a little time to update. Empty that folder and check again later.

Can I recover a conversation after deleting it?

On iOS versions with a Recently Deleted folder in Messages, you can recover it within about 30 days. After that, only a backup made before the deletion would have it.
